Random thoughts on our impending doom and everyday life, courtesy of a Romance Writer who occasionally feels the need to talk like a Sailor.

Sharing the love ... no, not in that way. Put your pants back on.

Today, I thought we should pay homage to some of the things that have enriched our lives lately and made us smile. It's all part of the talk up what you love philosophy that I'm embracing. And while I do very much appreciate my family and home on a daily basis, let's concentrate on the stuff that we can share here. My babies are great when they're not eating my last piece of cake, projectile vomiting, or doing other stuff kids do that makes them unlikely to be welcomed by anyone other than their father and I. And I tend not to share my husband. You'd probably just get him dirty and then I'd have to wash him in antiseptic and he gets soooo cranky when I do that. It is just not worth the carry on. Sorry. I don't know what his problem is.

So, the everyday stuff that has rocked our world of late. Some fantastic Aussie Authors have been on the blog recently, including Kylie Griffin, Ros Baxter, Sandra Antonelli, Mel Teshco and Cari Silverwood. I'm going to chuck some new recommendations your way, book and other wise, and then, in the comments, you throw some back at me. Let's share what we love. In a hygenic manner, of course

Books. Mmm. Paper or digital, I adore them all. "Reapers Property" by Joanne Wylde is about one woman's entrance into the world of motor bike clubs. Fantastic, awe inspiring worldbuilding. "Darkhouse" by Karina Halle breathes new life into paranormal romance and I think it's currently free. Go get it. "Painted Faces" by L H Cosway has a hero who is a cabaret performing drag queen. You will love him. Trust me. "Addicted" by Charlotte Stein was not only hysterically funny but her heroine was heartbreakingly human in her foibles. Loved it. Right now, I'm reading "Resisting Her" by Kendall Ryan. She writes fab contemporary romance with HAWT males. Check her out. Then I'm moving onto "Grease Monkey Jive" by Ainsley Paton. She's gotten some great reviews for this and apparently the male POV is mighty. Very much looking forward to it. I've also been told I need to read John Green so I'm going to do that.

Coffee. Always.

Music. Putting together a playlist for different books is more than just a costly and convoluted form of procrastination to yet again delay getting the words down. Mostly. Lately, I’ve been listening to “Xavier” by Australian Singer/Songwriter Melody Pool, "Love Interruption" by Jack White, and “Still” by English Indie band Daughter.

Blogs. There are lots of great ones out there. Here are a couple of posts I've read recently that come to mind. If you’re a writer and you’re not following Chuck Wendig’s Terrible Minds then feel free to smack yourself about the head with a wet fish.  Here’s one on ‘How Story Rebels Against Expectation’. Wonkomance is a group of Romance Writers talking shop and other stuff. Here’s the ‘Field Guide to Heroes of North America’ by Cara McKenna. Kate Cuthbert from Harlequin Escape wrote a good post on 'Rejected? This might be why...' And here's the important 'Want to be paid to blog about books?' post from Momentum. Applications close on the 25th so hurry!

Movie and TV wise, I’m waiting for Ripper Street to be delivered. In the meantime we’ve been watching Game of Thrones. I don’t believe there’s anyone out there who hasn’t been watching it. Not really. Warm Bodies was good fun for the whole family but Silver Linings Playbook is still easily my fave movie so far this year. 13 Assassins was a very cool and violent samurai film, available on DVD etc.

Alrighty then, come at me with your recommendations. Let’s share the love.

  1. So I'm reading and nodding and going yep, yep, read that, yep that was good, and yep must get that and then I get to the part where you mention me and all the stuffing comes out of my legs. I may not be able to walk for the rest of the afternoon. Can someone bring me coffee

  2. I'd share the love if I had more time to get to my TBR pile! Reaper's Property was fantastic. Can't wait for the rest of that series! Darkhouse is indeed still free. I read lots of paranormal romance submissions and anything that breathes new life into that sub genre is welcome! I've added the rest of your suggestions to the pile.

Not sure if I should admit to this but I've never seen Game of Thrones or read the series. Am I Robinson Crusoe here?

    1. I haven't read the series though they're on the pile. DEFINITELY worth watching though, Fiona. It's simply so well made. Hope you like Darkhouse and thanks for stopping by again, mate!

  3. I feel like I'm seeing a lot about Reaper's Property online at the moment. Must check it out. Contemps not really my thing but motorcycle world? Dark? Hello! Love something dark and gritty and hopefully a hero who might be almost mistaken for a villain.
Third the GOT recommendation. Everyone I've loaned it to has loved it, even though 'fantasy's not really their thing'. Can't wait to see Warm Bodies. I am trying hard to save for America but all these cool movies and books keep coming out. Sigh.

    1. Reapers is great, Bec. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Undeniable is another motorcycle world one that toes the line. It was interesting. Game of Thrones I really can't recommend highly enough. Great acting, enthralling, complicated, sometimes awful characters. Heroes where you least expect to find them. Brilliant show. And you lucky duck heading to America. I'm jealous.

  4. Phew! I'm not a complete loner then. :) Right, I'll definitely have a look at the TV series. Then I might understand what everyone's talking about! I forgot to say Ripper Street sounds interesting too. Let us know what you think.

  5. This is tough. Let's start by mentioning the awesomeness of the adaptation of Elmore Leonard's character Raylan Givens (played with lean-bodied aplomb by Timothy Lollypants--er--Olyphant) must be seen in the series Justified. Season 3 just wrapped up.
The sublime James Bond adventure continued with Daniel Craig in Skyfall, released on DVD last month.

Jo Goodman's True to the Law hits the shelves next month. I'd say Jo has the best western romance out there. Her stories are multi-layed, fast-paced, sexy, and the characters are deee-lish. She writes a helluva good book.

I have a Rachel Gibson sitting on my TBR pile as my reward for finishing my PhD. It's got a shitload of dust on it.

And if you missed it when it was on years ago, I highly recommend Bryan Fuller's TV series Dead Like Me. I'm watching it again. Ellen Muth plays Georgie, a young woman killed by a toilet seat. She's recruited to be a Reaper. The always mighty Mandy Patinkin is her 'handler/Boss, Rube. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you wonder why there weren't more than 2 seasons.

    1. Justified is great. Though the female characters peeve me occasionally. Raylan has terrible taste in women. I don't understand why he isn't married to me. Loser. Skyfall was good. I'm glad I went to see that on the big screen.

I haven't read Jo Goodman, will check her out. Thanks.

Dead Line Me was awesome. I only got to see the first season but it was great. Original and genius. Thanks for those, Sandra. Your recommendations are very muchly appreciated. :)

  6. Hey Kylie *waves*

I totally adore Game of Thrones, but my fav tv series right now (aside from The Walking Dead, but certain you've seen those lol!) is Dexter. So so so so good!!! Nothing like putting a murderer as a hero and cheering for him all the way =))

Books, I'm on a YA kick right now but still love my smexy reads too.

    1. Hey Mel! I'm always hearing good things about Dexter. A great idea for an anti-hero, that's for sure. Will have to give it a go. There are some great YA books out there, I still have to read the Hunger Games series. So far behind!
